A fine colour image by T Packer on this sheet celebrating Mary Campbell. She died aged only 23, her memory immortalised by Rabbie Burns who had an affair with her, and wrote amongst other poems 'To Mary in Heaven'.

Princess Louise

Queen Victoria's intention was that Princess Louise should marry a European Head of State, but she chose the Duke of Argyll. It is sad to recount that the marriage was childless, and apparently loveless, though it held together and Louise was said to be devastated by his death in 1915.

Death Before Dishonour

"The Watchword of the 42nd Highlanders (The Black Watch)." There were 5 Anglo-Ashanti wars between 1824 - 1900. This sheet probably refers to that of 1873 - 74, where at the Battle of Amaoful, the Black Watch 'led the way' to the tune of 'The Campbells are Coming' played on the pipes.

Edinburgh Quadrille

A sheet published by Davidson in London. The scenes depicted include Edinburgh from the Mound, Edinburgh Castle, The Castle of Doune, and The Palace of Holyrood. The music, by William Wilson, is made up of well-known tunes such as Scots Wha Hae, Annie Laurie, etc.

"Roderick Dhu", the clan chieftain portrayed in 'The Lady of the Lake' by Sir Walter Scott.

Caller Herrin
