Highland Houses: the Artist in the Landscape. Highland buildings often blend in with the landscape perfectly. As such, they have been an inspiration to artists, and I offer a few as examples on this album page.

A Highland Mill, by William Waterhouse. I have a set of delicate pencil sketches of Scotland by the same artist. William was one of 4 brothers - Alfred designed the Natural History Museum.
A landscape oil by Gertrude Coventry. The daughter of Robert McGowan Coventry, Gertrude studies at Glasgow, and lived in Scotland until she was 35.

An interesting sketch within an embossed surround. Artist unknown. Titles "A Fisherman's Cottage with a Disant View of Inveraray, Scotland." The cottage appears to have a thatched veranda.
"A Highland Cottage", by an unknown artist. A highland washing is in progress - another feature of highland life that caught the public's imagination. From a collection of European sketches held in an album inscribed 'Margaret Chisholm Landreth, 21st December 1831.'

An unknown view by Myles Tonks. A doctor by profession, Tonks was a prolific artist. I have a number of his landscapes of NW Scotland.
"Near Lochinver, Sutherland", by Irene Bache. An art teacher at Swansea, bache made a tour of the North Coast in the early 1970s. She painted prolifically wherever she went nd I have several of her Scottish sketches.
"Near Fort Augustus, 1870." From a set of sepia paintings, artist unknown.
"The Highlands, Autumn." By Major General A.W. Thorneycroft (1859 - 1931). After a distinguished career in the army, Thorneycroft painted this soon after his return from the Boer War in 1902.
"Road to Tomintoul", by Sarah Cowan, Dated July 1872. One of a number of Scottish sketches painted by Sarah and her sister. They lived in Ayr.

An attractive watercolour painting c.1805 by Juliana Glegg of Withington Hall, Cheshire. Possibly in Perthshire, where she saw the violinist Neil Gow.
