A Klibreck photo album, c.1912.

This week I have added a selection of photographs from an album I have recently obtained. The family, I suspect, lived in England, but they clearly made regular trips up to Klibreck, the settlement that adjoins Altnaharra in the wild landscape between Lairg and Tongue. Pococke found himself there in the 18th century, and so too the Botanist James Robertson, who was moved by the sight of deer on Ben Klibreck. They were still there in 1912, for many of these photos involve stalking and dogs. But there are also fine images of places further north, and this is a valuable record of a remote region at the start of the 20th century. Please see the page titled "Klibreck photos."

Next week my wife and I return to Scotland. I have to give a talk relating to my book, The Immeasurable Wilds, at the John O' Groats Book Festival on the 10th September, and I will be at the Ullapool Bookshop on the afternoon of the 12th. Should you be inclined to be at either of those events, do please come and say hello. I'll be back to this website when I return home later in the month.
