French Maps of Scotland: The Reluctance of French Cartographers to Improve their Maps of Scotland.
The above map was issued by Mr. Philippe in 1770, yet it shows little improvement on maps issued 200 years earlier. I take a brief look at French maps of the 18th century, and find that whilst their own surveys in France were of an impressive nature, their mapping of Scotland lagged well behind the improvements that had been published elsewhere.
