The Ben Nevis Observatory and Hotel: 'Luxury' on Britain's Highest Mountain

I have not climbed Ben Nevis, and was amazed to discover that, for some 30 years, you could find both a bed and refreshment on the summit of Britain's highest mountain. Adjoining it was a weather station that was manned day and night between 1883 - 1904. I have some remarkable photos some dating back to the 19th century which I shall post onto a photo album page on this website.

Thank you for visiting my website, Alastair.

Getting my book, 'The Immeasurable Wilds' feels at times a little like an illustration of one of Zeno's paradoxes: mathematically, you can halve the distance Zeno's arrow travels in a given trajectory, in which case it never reaches its target! However, if you are intending to buy a copy of the book once it is published, please hang on in there! I have corrected the proofs, and they are back with Whittles who should soon be coming up with the final typeset layout for my perusal. Not much chance of it being out in the shops in February, but hopefully it will be there in March. I will keep you posted, and meanwhile continue to load features onto this website. I am adding images all the time - for example, two interesting photographs by GWW of Eilean Donan Castle some time before it was restored in the 1930s.
