Some more southerly tourist destinations....Loch Katrine and Staffa.

Whilst my interest is mainly in the far north of Scotland, I find I cannot ignore those Scottish tourist destinations that lie further south. Once Sir Walter Scott's Lady of the Lake had been published the success of the book ensured a large number of visitors to the beautiful Trossachs area, which is easily accessible from Edinburgh and Glasgow.

News of the remarkable geology of the island of Staffa was spread by the famous naturalist Sir Joseph Banks after his visit in 1772, and whilst a calm sea was required for the approach, it nevertheless became a key attraction for the tourist on the west coast. Poor Mendelssohn suffered a bout of acute seasickness on his visit, but it didn't prevent him from composing his Hebrides Overture which added to the fame of the area.

With the tourists came a market for a large number of paintings, photographs and trinkets, some of which I have displayed on a number of pages on this website.
